70 Years Ago: Toilet Paper Fell From the Sky

LeRoy was only 13, but he had reason to celebrate. His brother would come home. Rollin was serving aboard the battleship USS Colorado, which was in Okinawa, waiting to join the attack on Japan. 70 years ago.

LeRoy and some friends caught a streetcar and found what he described as "the biggest crowd of excited people I've ever seen."

In Omaha Nebraska, toilet paper fell from the sky in celebration of the Japanese's surrender. The war was over. Rollin was coming home.

"It was a glorious time and went on far into the night," Ellison, also there that day, remembered.

"We made banners with brooms and white tea towels tacked to the handle," Barnes, then 11 said.

Cities across America celebrated but whether toilet paper fell from the sky, I don't know.
